Scotia Ceilidh Band

Overview

Scotland's Ceilidh Band with a Live DJ Set

Scotia Ceilidh Band has built up a fantastic reputation as one of the most fun ways to celebrate a wedding or party in Scotland. The band is led by Grant McFarlane, a finalist in the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2017 and a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Every dance called and explained
We call all our own dances. Each one is explained before it starts and the steps are demonstrated where needed, so complete beginners can join in from the very first Gay Gordons, while seasoned dancers still get a proper ceilidh.

A live DJ set as part of the night
When you need a breather from the jigs and reels, we switch to a live DJ set, playing chart hits, party classics and your own requests between the ceilidh sets and at the end of the night. Send us a playlist in advance and we'll read the room to keep the dance floor full. It's the best of both worlds: a traditional ceilidh and a disco from one booking.

We've performed all over Scotland, in venues ranging from castles and stately homes to church halls and conference suites. We use state-of-the-art equipment and are passionate about what we do.

Three packages to suit your event

Silver Package: 2-Piece Band | Accordion & Drums

Our two-piece band delivers a rich sound without compromising on quality. Live accordion and drums lead the night, and using state-of-the-art MIDI technology, we add bass and piano into the mix.

Gold Package: 3-Piece Band | Accordion, Drums & Fiddle

Our three-piece band delivers a big sound that captures all the traditional character of a ceilidh band. With MIDI piano and bass included in the mix, expect fast-flying tunes with an impressive backline throughout.

Platinum Package: 4-Piece Band | Accordion, Drums, Fiddle & Piano

Our four-piece band delivers an exceptional level of musicianship with a fantastic mix of instruments. The addition of live piano drives the jigs and reels throughout the night, while adding a gorgeous accompaniment for the gentler dances.

Couldn’t recommend Scotia and Hireaband more highly. They were very professional throughout the whole process and contributed to a great night. The band was excellent and very helpful teaching our guests to Ceilidh.

Scotia were absolutely fantastic from start to finish. A thoroughly professional outfit that provided everything requested and more. Thank you for an excellent evening.

Special mention to Ian, who kept everyone entertained, the ceilidh was brilliant fun, and the music throughout the evening was spot on. He helped make our day so special, and we couldn't have asked for better. We'd highly recommend Ian to anyone looking for a fantastic ceilidh band and wedding DJ. Thank you for everything!

The musicians and office from hireaband were very patient and professional. We have received very good feed-back from the attendees.

What a fantastic band they totally engaged with the crowd explained the dances and certainly made a huge contribution to an amazing night, we would definitely hire Scotia again for our next Ceilidh.

Absolutely outstanding service. Band were amazing and hireaband always kept in touch with updates.

Scotia were fantastic and really were the perfect finish to our wedding!
Brilliant music, friendly and kept the evening running perfectly on time!
Plenty of sore feet the next day from all of the dancing and even more positive reviews form our friends and family.
Thank you Scotia and Hireaband.

Grant and his band were fantastic. Great music, excellent instructions, very flexible and highly professional. A number of people at the do said that the band were great and it was the best ceilidh they had been to. Look no further if you are looking for a ceilidh band.

The band were truly excellent and flexible in mixing up the music, and we finished the night with ceilidh dancing too.
I’ve been more than happy with the communications and timely reminders received from Hire a Band and nothing at all has been an issue. Thanks again.

Scotia band were amazing at our wee wedding in the West End on Saturday. We were only 10-15 on the dance floor and most people had never been to a ceilidh before. Grant (the caller) was so patient, clear and professional and we had such a blast! 10/10 would recommend the band to anyone! Such a brilliant time. Thank you

Scotia Ceilidh Band was excellent and flexible. We submitted a nomination for them for the Scottish Wedding Awards. Thank you Scotia Ceilidh Band!!

Hello,
We just wanted to take the time to email and say thank you so much to you and the whole band for playing on our wedding day!
We are so glad we chose to book Scotia as you were so professional, organised and most importantly…made the evening great fun! You were amazing at getting all of our English guests involved too! You were definitely one of our highlights of the day - you brought such a great atmosphere and we can’t thank you enough!!
Take care,
Karen and David

Brilliant band. Would recommend Scotia Ceilidh Band to anyone. Friendly and just what we needed. A lot of variety in what they played. New dances to teach us but done with fun. Grant, as the leader of the group, was relaxed and engaged well with the newly married couple. A triumph!

Please thank the band they were fantastic and very patient with us oldies.

Our experience of Hireaband and Scotia Ceilidh duo was 100% positive. From the initial contact we were given plenty of support in finding an appropriate lineup for our family birthday party, and communication was excellent throughout the process. Grant was very helpful before the event and we felt that we were in safe hands throughout.
Everyone loved the music, which was very accomplished, and Grant good-humouredly talked the dancers through the steps, which was challenging as some had never been to a ceilidh before, and for others it was the first time in 50 years! The sound level was perfect, loud enough for the dancers but not so loud as to prevent conversation, which was appreciated by our older guests. Our group ranged from toddlers to ninety-plus and everyone loved it. Thanks Grant and Morag!!

Scotia ceilidh band performed at our wedding in November 2024 and they were absolutely fantastic. I had spoken to Grant, one of the band members, before the wedding and he was so good at answering my questions and putting my mind at ease. I was a bit concerned that our wedding guests wouldn't get up and dance but on the night the dance floor was never quiet! The ceilidh sets were brilliant- everyone commented on how much fun it was, and the caller was great at keeping everyone right with the steps. I was also so impressed by the DJ/disco set in between the ceilidh sets and at the end of the night- I had compiled a playlist in advance but Grant was brilliant at choosing songs that people would enjoy and dance to. I really feel like you get the best of both worlds with having both the ceilidh and the disco. Everyone commented on how much fun they had at our wedding and I think a massive part of that was the incredible atmosphere created by Grant and the other band members. I honestly couldn't recommend them enough. Thank you again for helping us have an amazing wedding day.

Massive thanks to Scotia Ceilidh band, who played brilliantly at my son’s wedding in Ghille Dhu, Edinburgh on Saturday. They explained the dances for our guests from England and Ireland, and the floor was full the entire evening. Feedback and photos have been incredible!
Thank you so much for making our day so special!

The entertainer provided an excellent service and was very accommodating. A memorable ceilidh thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Great band that were able to work well with a group of inexperienced ceilidh-ers. Very accommodating throughout the night and did an exceptional job of DJing our playlist for the last couple of hours. Would highly recommend!

The band was really amazing!! Music was brilliant and they did a great job with the calling as well. A lot of our guests had never attended a ceilidh before, and the band made sure everyone knew the steps and had a great time!

Thank you so much to Grant and all of Scotia for travelling up to Applecross for our wedding! The ceilidh and disco were absolutely fantastic - everyone really enjoyed themselves and were really complimentary of the group! Grant and the band were super lovely to chat with, and really flexible in meeting our requests for songs. We are so pleased we booked them! We would definitely recommend Scotia and Hireaband to others!

The booking process was very simple and the communication from Hireaband was really good. Everything was clear and professional. Scotia Ceilidh Band were fantastic on the night and helped make our Hogmanay event a great success. They were professional, friendly, and fantastic musicians. Grant was fantastic calling the dances. I'd definitely recommend!

I wanted to email you to say how pleased I was that I chose Scotia Ceilidh Band for my Birthday ceilidh at Kilmardinny House. Grant was very attentive to my proposed schedule, offering advice and being flexible as required, and the evening went just as I hoped it would.
The level of musicianship was exceptional and they tailored their repertoire to suit the occasion. Grant also ensured that the volume was at a level to suit my guests and included a wide variety of dances that my family and friends really appreciated.
Grant is extremely talented in providing a generous, respectful and kind atmosphere to the evening, and his enthusiastic and joyful 'calling' of the dances really made the party a wonderful success.
I can't thank him enough for ensuring my Birthday party was filled with fun, and superb music for dancing.
Thank you Hireaband for your personal communication; friendly and respectful chats on the phone, helpful advice and reassurance, and the efficient and thorough service you provided in the run up to my event. I wouldn't hesitate to use Hireaband again.

Scotia Band were amazing. They communicated well before and during the event and called the dances in a low key way allowing everyone to be involved. They were also very accommodating to a few requests we made of them on the evening including playing a live version of our first dance song and providing the equipment to allow the Grooms choir pals to sing for us.
Importantly they arrived and set up on time and efficiently not allowing a smashed windscreen to deter from their commitment to evening.
Well done and thanks to all in Scotia band.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the band. We had an incredible evening and the entertainment was perfect. Many of our guests had never been to a ceilidh and they all loved it. The DJ set with Grant was outstanding. It simply was perfect and exactly what we wanted, everybody from the kids to great uncles were up and dancing.

The band were great. Just as described on your web site, only better. Really enthusiastic and didn't mind at all that there were so few of us. We all danced all night

Scotia were FANTASTIC!

The band was fantastic fun. We are so pleased we were convinced to add some traditional Scottish dancing to our special day as it made the day totally memorable for all who were there! Thank You!

The band was excellent. They were great musicians and we loved the ceilidh music and dancing. It was good to have instructions for those that did not know the dances. Everyone at the party said how much their enjoyed the ceilidh. We liked having a disco section in the middle and the band looked after this too, putting on songs that we had requested and judging if the music was right for the crowd.

The dance floor was full all evening with ceilidh dancing and disco dancing. A member of the band kept in close communication with me, asking if everything was ok and whether the format was going according to plan. I appreciated this support because it was a busy night being the host. The final section of the night with more ceilidh dancing and rounding off dances was superb. It was all very professional and well judged by a great band. Thanks for making our wedding party such a memorable celebration. Great venue, too!

We had a brilliant experience with both Hireaband and Scotia Ceilidh Band. Hireaband was very easy to use and informative, with the team checking in with us regularly and ensured all paperwork was handled efficiently.

Grant, Mhairi and Graeme (aka Team Scotia) made our lives very easy in the build up to the day and the wedding reception itself. They were super understanding and efficient about the lateness of our playlist, were very organised on the day with the set up and first dance, and dj'd our playlist perfectly during the main part of the night.

Grant was fab at calling the ceilidh, with Mhairi coming onto the floor to help out during the trickier dances. Graeme even added a bit of extra drumming during the DJ set - we would highly recommend them for anyone looking for a spirited ceilidh that is also friendly to inexperienced guests!

Sam and Marina

Band were punctual and very professional at my daughters wedding and would certainly endorse them as their sound is quite unique and they did quite a few quirky adaptations of well known songs which went down well with the guests at the wedding.

Regards
John Scullion

We used Hireaband to find a group to play at our joint 30th birthday ceilidh. The website was really easy to use and having several sample tracks from each band made choosing so much easier! We went with Scotia in the end who were absolutely fantastic! Big thanks to Karen and Julie who arranged the whole thing and even when there were a few changes to the contract required, the amendments were made and contract re-sent within minutes! Great service!

My partner and I, along with all of our guests, would like to say a massive thank you to Scotia for putting on a fantastic ceilidh for our joint 30th party. The band were very friendly and were set up and ready to go in plenty of time. Our guests varied in their experience from complete novices to old hands and the band were very helpful in getting everyone up and dancing away! They were flexible in terms of their set list and went with the flow of the evening. At the end of the night they were packed up promptly and didn’t require any assistance which made the whole experience very easy for us!

Just a quick note to let you know how excellent Scotia were last Saturday for our ceilidh. The dance floor was never empty, and the evening was enjoyed equally by our guests from England who had never been to s full-blown Scottish ceilidh before, and by our Scottish guests who have been dancing at ceilidhs all their lives. To quote one of our Scottish veterans:
"It was good to see how everyone joined in the dancing, and thanks to the band, found new skills at Scottish country dancing they never knew they possessed!!".

Please pass on our thanks to the band, and certainly I can recommend them to anyone looking for a good ceilidh band for a good evening.
And thanks to you at Hireaband for making the whole process of finding and booking a band so hassle-free. It can be pretty daunting to find a good band suit the occasion, but this is the second time we have booked through Hireaband, and we have not been disappointed on either occasion.

We booked Scotia for our wedding reception after hearing them perform at our work's Christmas party - they were brilliant!! My husband & I love that whilst they play all the classics they have a musical diversity better than any other band out there. The MC was hilarious and so much fun - I would choose Scotia every time!

Thank you so much for exceeding our expectations at our wedding in Strathblane Country House. Our guests had a ball and those from the north said "Now that's what you call a proper ceilidh!'

Wonderful night last night! I would highly recommend Scotia Ceilidh Band for any occasion. They play a wide range of music and Jim is an excellent compere who keeps you on the floor all night. They are all very friendly, very experienced and confident musicians.

Would just like to say a huge thank you for a great performance at my wedding! What a fantastic ceilidh band and great fun - we would definitely recommend you highly to anyone looking for a ceilidh band on their wedding day.

Previously our church had been using another Ceilidh band who are very good. As they were unavailable, Scotia were recommended to us. I have never before heard the level of applause given at the end of the night, as I did for Scotia. The feedback we received after our event was that the Ceilidh band were the best they had ever heard. We will always look to book Scotia first now!

I booked Scotia for a fundraising ceilidh and they really made the night a great success. Their music was excellent and the MC was great at getting everyone upon their feet! Enjoyed the night so much and after lots of praise from our guests we booked Scotia again for the following year. Once again we were not disappointed.

FAQs

Who calls the dances at a Scotia ceilidh?

Grant McFarlane, who leads the band, calls every dance himself. Before each one he explains the steps and, where needed, walks everyone through it on the floor, so complete beginners can join in from the very first dance. The band keep an eye on the floor too and will step in to help when a trickier dance needs a hand.

Can Scotia play a DJ set as well as the ceilidh?

Yes, and it's one of the things couples love most about them. A live DJ set comes as part of the package, so you can mix ceilidh sets with chart hits and party classics in between and at the end of the night. Send over a playlist in advance and Grant will play your requests while reading the room to keep the dance floor full. It really is the best of both worlds: a proper ceilidh plus a disco, without booking two acts.

Which Scotia line-up is right for our event?

There are three packages. Silver is a 2-piece with accordion and drums, with bass and piano added through MIDI technology. Gold is a 3-piece with accordion, drums and fiddle for that classic ceilidh band sound. Platinum is a 4-piece with accordion, drums, fiddle and live piano, which drives the jigs and reels and adds lovely accompaniment to the gentler dances. The instant quote on our website is for the 3-piece Gold package; just ask our team if you'd like a price for Silver or Platinum.

Most of our guests have never been to a ceilidh. Will they cope?

Absolutely. Scotia regularly play to rooms full of first-timers, from guests travelling up from England, Ireland and further afield to friends who haven't danced a Strip the Willow in fifty years. Clear, patient calling and a good choice of dances mean everyone from toddlers to great-grandparents can get up and have a go.

Is Scotia a good fit for a small wedding or party?

Yes. Scotia are just as happy with ten or fifteen people on the floor as they are with a packed function suite, and the 2-piece Silver package suits smaller rooms and budgets particularly well. Grant chooses dances that work for the size of your group, so a small gathering never feels empty.

How does an evening with Scotia usually run?

Most evenings alternate ceilidh sets with DJ sets, often finishing with a final round of ceilidh dances to round the night off. Grant will talk through your timings before the day and agree a running order with you, then stay in touch with you or your venue during the evening to make sure everything is going to plan.

Can Scotia play our first dance?

Let us know your first dance song when you book. Scotia have played live versions of first dance songs for couples before, and if a live version isn't possible they can play the original recording through their sound system so the moment still goes perfectly.

Will the music be too loud for older guests?

No. Scotia set the volume to suit your guests: loud enough to drive the dancing, but not so loud that people can't chat at their tables. They're also used to working with venue sound limiters, so there are no surprises on the night.

Do Scotia only play weddings?

Weddings are a big part of what they do, but Scotia also play birthday parties, anniversaries, Hogmanay ceilidhs, charity and church fundraisers, and corporate and university events. Whatever the occasion, the format is easy to tailor to your crowd.

Where have Scotia performed?

Scotia have played all over Scotland, in venues ranging from castles and stately homes to church halls and conference suites. Venues they have played include the National Piping Centre, Trades Hall and Oran Mor in Glasgow, the Royal Botanic Garden and Ghillie Dhu in Edinburgh, Kilmardinny House, Carrick Castle and community halls as far afield as Applecross.

Will Scotia travel to remote or Highland venues?

Yes. Scotia have travelled as far as Applecross in Wester Ross for a wedding, so distance is rarely a problem. For longer journeys there may be a travel fee and the band may need accommodation, and our team will include this in your quote so there are no surprises.

Who is Grant McFarlane?

Grant leads Scotia and is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He was also a finalist in the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2017, so you're getting a seriously accomplished traditional musician as well as a warm, good-humoured caller.

Can guests use the band's microphone for speeches or a song?

Usually, yes. At one wedding Scotia even provided the equipment for the groom's choir friends to sing on the night. Just let us know beforehand if you'd like a microphone for speeches or a guest performance so the band can plan for it.

What do Scotia need from our venue?

Scotia bring all their own sound equipment. They simply need a clear space to set up and access to a power supply. A meal is appreciated if they're travelling a long way or arriving well before they play, and our team will confirm the details with you beforehand.

What happens if a band member is unwell on the day?

It's very rare, but Scotia have a network of experienced traditional musicians they can call on to stand in. Behind them is Hireaband, established in 1999 and one of Scotland's best-known entertainment agencies, so your ceilidh is in safe hands.

How do we check Scotia's availability and book?

Add Scotia to your shortlist and request an instant quote for the 3-piece Gold package, or contact the Hireaband team for a price on the 2-piece or 4-piece line-ups. If the date is free and you're happy with the price, get in touch to secure it. Dates are booked on a first come, first served basis, so it's worth acting quickly.

Are Scotia insured, and is their equipment safety tested?

Yes on both counts. Scotia hold public liability insurance and all their electrical equipment is PAT tested. Many venues ask to see these documents before the day, so we'll happily send copies straight to your venue coordinator. That's one less thing for you to chase.
